Helena Rohner: ‘The jewel is a shy sculpture’ / ‘La joya es una escultura tímida’

Designer Helena Rohner is able to dialogue with colors and shapes to create objects with soul. Her jewels are known for her personal style and the undeniable elegance. Simplicity, evocation of nature, artisan quality and vitality are the main features of her pieces. When you treasure one of these, you know it is forever.

La diseñadora Helena Rohner es capaz de dialogar con los colores y las formas para crear objetos con alma. Sus joyas son conocidas por su estilo personal y su innegable elegancia. Sencillez, evocación de la naturaleza, calidad artesana y vitalidad son las principales características de sus piezas. Los que atesoramos una de ellas, sabemos que es para siempre.

 

Question: Welcome to Lisbon, Paris, Madrid, Helena. Your jewels are recognizable and own an unique personality, regardless of the collection they belong… Where did this peculiar style born?

Answer: My style… it’s my way of seeing the world and it’s a part of me. It’s organic, soft and it’s how I want to live.

Pregunta: Helena, bienvenida a Lisbon, Paris, Madrid. Tus joyas son reconocibles y tienen una personalidad única con independencia de la colección a la que pertenecen. ¿De dónde nace ese estilo tan propio?

Respuesta: Mi estilo… es mi manera de ver el mundo y es una parte de mí. Es orgánico, suave y es como quiero vivir.

Q: As you know, in this blog we talk about the sources of inspiration for designers, whatever their speciality is, because inspiration is in the basis of the creative work. Have you found an inspiration source that accompanies you in all your projects or are you looking for a new source for each collection?

A: I always try to find a new inspiration, something that triggers the beginning of a collection, but the truth is that nature is one of my most recurrent sources. Everything I do is very connected to it.

P: Como sabes, en este blog hablamos de las fuentes de inspiración de los diseñadores, cualquiera que sea su especialidad, por ser la base del trabajo de creación. ¿Has encontrado una fuente de inspiración que te acompaña en todos tus proyectos o buscas una fuente nueva para cada colección?

R: Intento buscar siempre una nueva inspiración, algo que despierte el inicio de una colección pero, la verdad, es que la naturaleza es una de mis fuentes más recurrentes. Todo lo que hago está muy conectado con ella.

Q: Are fashion and jewelry close? Are they just two different worlds that coexist or are they linked?

A: Jewelry is a way of expressing the personality of the ones that wear it, even more than clothes, because we vary more. The jewels are closer to the body and have something fetishistic, because they become a part of us as we use them.

P: ¿Qué cercanía existe entre la moda y la joyería? ¿Son dos mundos diferentes que simplemente coexisten o están vinculados?

R: Las joyas son una manera de expresar la personalidad del que los lleva, incluso mas que la ropa, porque variamos mas. Las joyas están más cerca del cuerpo y tienen algo de fetichistas al volverse parte de uno a medida que uno las usa.

Q: In the world of fashion, trend is a religion. Is it the same in jewelry?

A: Fashion, as I see it, reflects the social changes we are living. Jewels do the same. Trends are a reflection of our moods, our lives and needs.

P: En el universo de la moda, la tendencia es una religión. ¿Ocurre lo mismo en joyería?

R: La moda, a mi modo de ver, refleja los cambios sociales que vivimos. Las joyas hacen lo mismo. Las tendencias son un reflejo de nuestros estados de ánimo, de nuestra vida y necesidades.

Q: In addition to your jewelry collections, you are a product designer with a broad portfolio and career. You also collaborate with FAD and Georg Jensen, among others. Is the design of objects a logic consequence of jewelry design?

A: I like to think that the jewel is a shy sculpture. Creating larger pieces that are also objets of use is a projection of that same love for useful form.

P: Además de tus colecciones de joyas, eres una diseñadora de producto con un amplio portfolio y trayectoria. También colaboras con FAD y Georg Jensen, entre otros. ¿El diseño de objetos es una consecuencia lógica del diseño de joyas?

R: Me gusta pensar que la joya es una escultura tímida. Crear piezas más grandes que también son objetos de uso es una proyección de ese mismo amor a la forma útil.

Q: Your jewels and objects have a very high conceptual quality and craftsmanship. How does a brand with such strong values deal with today’s market in which online immediacy is the base?

A: I strongly believe the soul of the jewels and that’s why I turn to the crafts and knowhow, giving value to the materials. I also believe that, like me, there are customers looking for special pieces, handcrafted and designed without watching the clock. Pieces that are long-lasting and become classics.

P: Tus joyas y objetos tienen una calidad conceptual y artesana muy elevada. ¿Cómo se enfrenta una marca con valores tan sólidos al mercado de hoy en el que la inmediatez de lo online es la base?

R: Creo firmemente en el alma de las joyas y por eso recurro a la artesanía y el buen hacer, dando valor a los materiales. Creo también que, como yo, hay clientes que buscan piezas especiales, hechas a mano y pensadas con pausa. Piezas que también son duraderas y se convierten en clásicos.

Q: In your collections there are jewels for women and men but, what defines all the people who wear them?

A: I would say that is a sensitive, cultured and subtle in their manners person.

P: En tus colecciones hay joyas femeninas y masculinas pero, ¿qué define a todas las personas que las lleva?

R: Diría que es una persona sensible, culta y sutil en sus maneras.

Q: All designers have references of all kind, but we would like to know who are the artists and designers you admire.

A: I love Anish Kapoor, because he stands up for warm materials and colors of Minimalism. In fashion? Big designers like Phoebe Philo for Céline or Martin Margiela, both because their simplicity and their commitment to the essential and daring.

P: Los diseñadores tenemos referencias de todo tipo, pero nos gustaría saber quiénes son los artistas y diseñadores que admiras.

R: Me encanta Anish Kapoor, porque defiende los materiales cálidos y los colores del Minimalismo. ¿En moda? Grandes diseñadores como Phoebe Philo para Céline o Martin Margiela, ambos por su sencillez y su apuesta por lo esencial y atrevido.

Q: More and more theories support that there is a feminine design and a masculine design world. According to these theories, feminine design provides values that the masculine forgets and the opposite. Do you agree?

A: Is difficult to talk about gender at design but, in general, I agree that there is a noticeable difference in the expresion of form. Women usually soften angles and men emphasize forms to the geometrical. But this is a generalization.

P: Cada vez existen más teorías que afirman que existe un diseño femenino y un diseño masculino. Según estas teorías, el diseño femenino aporta valores que el masculino olvida y al revés. ¿Estás de acuerdo?

R: Es difícil hablar del sexo del diseño, pero si estoy de acuerdo que, en general, se nota una diferencia en la expresión de la forma. Las mujeres solemos suavizar ángulos y los hombres, marcar las formas hacia lo geométrico. Pero esto es una generalización.

Q: You chose Madrid as the city to live and we wonder what attracted you to this place.

A: In the beginning, Madrid was a bet between London, where I was living at the moment, and the Canary Islands, where I was born. Soon I realized that it had become my city, small enough to walk and live spontaneously, but full of cultural activities and a very rich nature in the surroundings. My only niggle is that there is no sea…

P: Elegiste Madrid como la ciudad para vivir y nos preguntamos qué te atrajo de este lugar.

R: Al principio, Madrid fue una apuesta entre Londres, donde vivía en ese momento, y Canarias, donde nací. Al poco me di cuenta que se había convertido en mi ciudad, lo bastante pequeña para caminar y vivir de forma espontánea, pero llena de actividad cultural y con una naturaleza muy rica a sus alrededores. Mi única pega es que no hay mar…

Q: Helena, to finish, we cannot help asking you what jewel should a woman choose if she could only choose one.

A: A ring of enamelled, bright and colourful porcelain. I think it is the essence of my vision: mixture of materials with organic form.

P: Helena, para terminar, no podemos evitar preguntarte qué joya debe escoger una mujer en el caso de que solo pudiera elegir una.

R: Un anillo de porcelana esmaltada, luminoso y colorista. Creo que lleva la esencia de mi visión: mezcla de materiales y forma orgánica.
